The Brothers Romero

Yunielqui (Age 25, shirt) and his brother Yurilandis (22) live in the countryside of Baracoa with their family that includes their parents and a sister who has a child.  Yuni was born deaf, while Yuri has a serious hearing gloss resulting from meningitis when he was a baby.  Both of these brothers are non verbal and have no language or communication skills.  They also showed severe developmental delays.  Mainly because they live so far off the beaten path, the brothers never received any schooling or training.

They simply live with their family while their father, who is battling an ongoing sickness, works as a migrant farmer locally whenever he is physically able or there is work available.  The economic situation of their family is severe as they only receive a government pension of $75 pesos/mo. ($3.00 USD/mo)

Their mother brings Yunielqui and Yurilandis to church with her when she can, as she accepted Christ 6 years ago and is hoping through the Deaf Ministry at the Church that her sons might be able to respond to sign language, but that has not happened yet.

Prior to Hurricane Matthew, the family had a larger main house, while Yuri & Yuri's sister and her son lived in a smaller shack on the property.  Unfortunately, the whole main house was lifted off its foundation by the hurricane and everything was completely destroyed.  Now they all live in the older sister's 2 room shack that only has two and half beds squeezed inside on e bedroom.
